Abbreviate! has no accounts, no ads, no analytics, and no tracking. What you type stays on your devices: on a Mac, iPhone, or iPad, and in your own iCloud account; on Android, on your phone alone. The only thing that ever reaches us is a message you choose to send with Send Feedback.
This policy covers the Abbreviate! apps for Mac, iPhone, and iPadiPad, and Android, made by Productivity Software, LLC (“we”).
What you type
A text expander has to see your keystrokes. It can’t recognize “omw” without seeing the o, the m, and the w. What matters is what it does with them.
- On the Mac, Abbreviate! keeps only the word you’re typing, and the one you just finished, in memory, to tell whether it’s one of your abbreviations. Nothing you type is saved, logged, learned from, or sent anywhere. macOS hides password fields from it entirely.
- On iPhone and iPad, the Abbreviate! keyboard learns the words and phrases you use so it can suggest them. What it learns is encrypted and kept on your devices and in your own iCloud account. We can’t see it. Nothing is learned from password, one-time code, or credit card fields, and you can remove any learned word in the app.
- On Android, the Abbreviate! keyboard learns the words and phrases you use in the same way. What it learns is kept only on your phone, in storage no other app can read. We can’t see it: the Android app never sends what you type, or what it learns, anywhere. Nothing is learned in password fields, or in fields that ask keyboards not to learn, such as a browser’s private tabs, and you can remove any learned word in the app.
Your abbreviations and settings
Your abbreviations, prediction sets, and settings are stored on your devices and synced between them through your own private iCloud account, using Apple’s iCloud services. We have no access to them. Files you export go where you choose to put them.
The keyboard’s “Allow Full Access” setting is what lets it reach that data and sync it. iOS requires it of any keyboard that does more than type letters. Abbreviate! doesn’t use it to send what you type anywhere.
On Android, your abbreviations, learned words, and settings are kept only on your phone, in the app’s private storage. They aren’t synced, and they aren’t included in Android’s backups. Sets you share go only where you choose to send them.
Purchases
Abbreviate! is bought through the App Store. Apple handles the payment, and we never receive your name, payment details, or Apple ID. So that your Mac can tell the app has been bought, the purchase record Apple signs is saved in your own iCloud account, where only your devices read it.
On Android, Abbreviate! is bought through Google Play, and Google handles the payment. The app checks the purchase only with Google Play on your phone.
Send Feedback
When you use Send Feedback, your message is sent to us through Formspree, a form-delivery service, along with your email address if you choose to enter one. We use it only to read your feedback and, if you gave an address, to reply. We don’t add you to any mailing list, and we don’t sell or share what you send.
Connections the apps make
Apart from Apple’s iCloud and App Store services, the apps connect only to our website, abbreviateapp.com, to download the latest Help and, on the Mac, to check for updates. These requests contain nothing you typed. Like any web request, they reveal your device’s IP address to the server; we don’t use it to identify you.
The Android app connects to the internet only to send a message you write in Send Feedback, when you tap Send. Google Play handles its purchase and its updates.
Children
Abbreviate! isn’t directed to children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from anyone.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new effective date.
